The history of Chambers of Commerce

As long as trade has existed, business groups, networks and Chambers of Commerce have existed. The main focus of these groups has been to aid local businesses by helping them network, communicate details of their goods and services more widely and act as a collective voice to help promote common interests to other local business groups, governmental bodies and regulators.

You may not know this, but Abingdon used to have a highly successful and busy Chamber. Unfortunately, it closed not long after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Why a new Chamber now?

Today’s business environment is challenging. With taxes, utilities, the cost living and rents rising, as well as the regulatory environment getting more complex seemingly every month, businesses need someone on their side. The Chamber has been re-established to provide this assistance.

Today’s Chamber has entirely new management and focus. We’re keen for Abingdon businesses to be able to benefit from a Chamber who focuses solely on their interests while keeping administration (and membership fees) as low as possible.

With this in mind, we’re starting small, with no membership fees and online presence only. We plan to hold physical meetings in due course but, in the mean time, please feel free to join us on WhatsApp.
